‘Iolani School welcomed four other schools on Saturday, December 7th 2013, to the annual ‘Iolani Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament, the only one of its kind in Hawaii. This is the second year that the ‘Iolani Div C team has organized such an event. The schools that participated included: ‘Iolani, McKinley, Mililani, Hawaii Baptist Academy, and University Laboratory School.
The ‘Iolani Invitational tournament seems to be gaining popularity. The tournament had twice the number of participants compared to last year. The day kicked off with an Opening ceremony in the lower gym that featured speakers Michael Silva, one of last year’s captains for ‘Iolani’s Div C, and Mr. Kay, a renowned AP Biology teacher whose legacy at ‘Iolani stretches over 50 years. Schools then went off to compete in 15 building and test-taking events and enjoyed an ice cream social in the evening. Dr. Cottrell, ‘Iolani School’s Headmaster, presided over the closing ceremony and distributed awards. Everyone tried their best in their events and Hawaii Baptist Academy won the Spirit Award for enthusiasm, class, and great attitude.
Having reached Hawaii nearly a decade ago, Science Olympiad is a demanding but popular activity with hundreds of middle and high school students involved. Teams are now heading into the peak of competition season with the crucial Regional tournaments, which will determine which teams advance to the State finals. Invitationals are a crucial step in preparing teams for such competitions. We look forward to see new Invitationals emerge in our state. Any school interested in conducting an Invitational can feel free to email us at Iolani.Invitational@gmail.com. We’d be more than glad to help out as well as participate! The ‘Iolani Invitational is an annual event, so we hope to see everyone this December 2014.
The team is grateful to the many ‘Iolani teachers, coaches, and team parents whose collective support makes Science Olympiad possible at our school. We are also thankful to the participating schools and their coaches, as well as Mr. Allaire and Hawaii State Science Olympiad, all of whom helped make our second Invitational possible.
